In Woodbridge, Virginia, food insecurity is a pressing issue that affects many residents, from children to the elderly. Despite the area’s outward appearance of affluence, with large homes and reputable schools, many families and individuals are struggling to put food on the table.
Uni Mansaray, a community advocate and student leader who grew up in Woodbridge, understands these hidden struggles. “A lot of people out here are struggling,” Uni shares. “You see big houses, but that doesn’t mean the kids are eating well or getting the right resources.” This personal insight drives his commitment to The House Inc., a local organization that supports at-risk youth and families.
The House Inc., known for its innovative approach to community support, created the HANGRY Truck to address local hunger. The mobile kitchen and food distribution center bring fresh, nutritious food directly to those in need, but with a focus on not only providing food, but allowing patrons to actively decided what they want to take home rather than receiving a prepackaged box. “The HANGRY Truck is about bringing food closer to those who need it most,” explains Helen, president of The House Inc. “It’s not just about food; it’s about dignity and choice. We let people choose their groceries, which makes a huge difference.”
Sentara has partnered with The House Inc. to enhance the reach and impact of the HANGRY Truck. This partnership has allowed the truck to expand its services, reaching more neighborhoods and providing not just meals but hope. “Thanks to Sentara, we can bring our partnership to different communities and make a real impact,” Founder and President, Helen McCormick, adds. “They support our vision and help us scale our efforts to meet the needs of more people.”
This collaboration between Sentara and The House Inc. reflects a deep commitment to solving the area’s social drivers of health. By working together, Sentara, The House Inc., and the students that built and shaped the HANGRY Truck are addressing food insecurity in Woodbridge and creating a model for community resilience.
Uni believes that the partnership’s impact extends beyond just providing food. “It’s about building relationships and showing people that someone cares,” he says. “When you see the smiles on their faces, you know you’re making a difference.”
Together, Sentara and The House Inc., are not just addressing immediate needs but also fostering a sense of community and belonging, one student and one meal at a time.
