Sentara & Feed Halifax: Building a Healthier Community Together

Bridging The Distance For A Healthier Halifax County

In Halifax County, community is a commitment. It’s the friendly wave from a neighbor and the shared pride in our rural landscape. We believe that health shouldn’t be defined by how far you live from a grocery store, or the challenges of a vast geography. Statistics from 2023 show that nearly half of the people in Halifax County qualify for food assistance, making our mission more critical than ever.

Helping neighbors access the food they need is a vital part of Sentara’s broader commitment to making sure everyone has the resources to live their healthiest life. This partnership is built on the understanding that consistent access to nutritious food is a powerful tool in managing and preventing chronic conditions, enabling our community remains strong and resilient.

Addressing The Need Across Our Rural Landscape

Halifax County is defined by its beautiful and expansive landscape. While the rolling hills and open spaces are home to many, the sheer scale of our region presents a significant hurdle for those struggling with food insecurity. Across this sprawling area, six dedicated local pantries worked tirelessly to serve their neighbors. However, we realized that even with these pillars of support, many families remained out of reach. In a community where public transit is limited, the distance to the nearest food pantry can be a tough barrier for a neighbor in need.

We saw that the people who needed support the most were often the ones least able to travel. Seniors living in isolated pockets of the county and families balancing multiple jobs were being left behind by a system that required them to come to us.

“We didn’t want people to have to choose between putting gas in their car or buying food for their families,” noted Kim Carson, Director of Emergency Services at Tri-County Community Action Agency.

We recognized that the geography of our home was unintentionally preventing access to basic nutrition, and we knew a new approach was required to ensure no one was forgotten.

A Unified Partnership To Bring The Food Directly To You

The realization that many of our neighbors were being left behind led to a transformative collaboration. Instead of operating in isolation, a powerful partnership formed between Sentara, the Triangle Volunteer Fire Department, and six area food pantries — People’s Pantry, Serving Hope, Jane Jones Pantry, Ellis Creek, White Oak, and The Good Samaritan.

This mission was driven by the understanding that if our neighbors cannot get to the food, we must work together to bring the food to them. By pooling resources and expertise, this group created a mobile network specifically designed to navigate the wide reaches of the county.

The Triangle Volunteer Fire Department provided the essential logistical support needed to reach every corner of the region, while Sentara’s commitment to community health provided the vital resources to launch a dedicated mobile food truck. This mobile food truck allows us to transport fresh, nutritious food directly into the neighborhoods where they are needed most.

To further ensure that help is available regardless of a neighbor’s work schedule or location, the partnership also implemented 24-hour food lockers. These lockers provide a secure and dignified way for families to access food at any time of day or night. Together, this team has turned the map of Halifax County into a roadmap for connection, proving that when healthcare, public safety, and local pantries work as one, no distance is too great to overcome.
